Pass your test sooner in an automatic car

Learning to drive an automatic car is ideal if you are nervous about driving or simply want to get your driving licence sooner without the fuss of changing through all those gears! Just think — no tricky hill starts, struggling to find the biting point, or wondering “what gear do I need for this busy roundabout?”

Despite all the benefits of learning to drive in an automatic, think carefully before making your final decision. Once you pass your automatic driving test you will have a UK licence that forbids you from driving manual vehicles. This may limit your choices later on in life when buying or renting cars.

If you still haven’t decided, you might want to consider taking driving lessons in a manual car.

I'm absolutely thrilled today! I just took one of the most important exams of my life and passed with flying colours, but I have to admit, I wasn't always this confident. When I first started driving lessons, I really doubted myself and my abilities. But my instructor, Rommel, was amazing from the start: he motivated me, encouraged me, and told me he'd help me get my licence on the first try. I didn't believe him because I did not feel confidentat all, but he never gave up on me. He helped me gain the skills and confidence I needed to become a safe driver.Today, thanks to Rommel's incredible support, I achieved my first goal of 2025. He played a massive part in helping me,believe in me and making my dream come true!
My time with Paul Branford was an incredibly positive experience, resulting in passing my test first time. He was puntual and friendly, putting me at ease from the get-go.My abilities were quickly assessed , and lesson time was allocated accordingly, tailoring the program to my needs , all manoeuvres were explained clearly.I went into my test, sooner than expected, as my instructor knew i was keen to take it. I was filled with confidence as a result of multiple mock tests completed and reflected upon in the days prior to equpting me with ampel knowledge of what to expect on test day. I would highly reccomed Paul Branford
I had the pleasure of learning how to drive with Jerry, and I couldn’t have asked for a better instructor. He is incredibly patient and always made sure to teach me in ways that suited my learning style. Jerry made sure I felt confident and comfortable behind the wheel. Thanks to him, I passed my test with flying colors! Highly recommend Jerry to anyone looking for a supportive, knowledgeable, and approachable driving instructor.
Im extremely happy to pass my test on Friday 3rd January with my fantastic driving instructor Gareth Bowkett. He is a lovely person. He was very patient with all the mistakes i made and was always encouraging me to improve. I will highly recommend How 2 Drive and Gareth to anybody who is planning to learn driving.
I’m so pleased to say I’ve passed my driving test, and it’s all thanks to my brilliant instructor, James Tinsey!James was not only patient and supportive but also incredibly relatable, which made every lesson enjoyable and comfortable. He has an incredible depth of knowledge about driving, and his teaching methods are second to none. He broke everything down so clearly, making even the most challenging aspects easy to understand and apply.Every lesson was well-structured and focused on my progress, and James always tailored his approach to suit my needs. His encouragement and calm manner gave me so much confidence, and his relatable nature made it easy to ask questions or voice any concerns.I’m definitely going to miss our lessons. Thank you so much, James! I couldn’t recommend him highly enough to anyone learning to drive.

Why Learn To Drive in an Automatic Car?

It’s easier because there’s no need to worry about changing gears. An automatic car may suit you if you have tried learning in a car with manual transmission and struggled, or if you’re in a hurry to pass and get your licence.

Will I Be Allowed to Drive a Manual Car When I Pass?

No — so think carefully before you decide whether you want to learn to drive in an automatic car. Even once you’ve passed your driving test, you’ll only be allowed to drive cars and vans that have an automatic transmission or dual clutch system.

*According to the DVSA (the people who set the driving test) it takes on average 47 hours of driving lessons and another 20 hours of private practice to pass the UK driving test.

By using our structured driver training system, we help our learners pass after an average of just 30 hours of driving lessons – that’s 17 hours fewer than the DVSA average!
